Hello everyone and welcome to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for a brand new series all about mindfulness and relaxation. Mindfulness is a special skill that helps us to feel calm, focused and aware of the world around us. By the end of this episode you'll know what mindfulness is and how you can use it every day.
Let's get started. Mindfulness is all about paying attention to the present moment. That means noticing what's happening right now, what you can see, hear, feel and even smell. Have you ever been outside and noticed the sound of birds singing or the feeling of wind on your face? That's mindfulness. Sometimes our minds like to wander. We might think about what happened yesterday or worry about something in the future, but mindfulness helps us bring our focus back to right now. It's like pressing the pause button and taking a moment to just be.
Let's hear a story about a boy named Leo who discovered the power of mindfulness. Leo was always in a hurry. He rushed through breakfast, ran to school and never stopped to notice the world around him. One day his teacher gave the class a special challenge. Take a mindful walk and notice five things they had never seen before. At first Leo thought it sounded silly but as he walked home he decided to give it a try. He noticed a tiny spider resting on a leaf, the soft crunch of gravel under his feet, and the way the sunlight made patterns on the pavement. By the time he got home, Leo felt calmer and happier than usual. I never realised how many amazing things were around me, he said.
What do you think Leo learned about mindfulness. Just like Leo we can all learn to be more mindful. Here are three simple ways to practice mindfulness every day. First we can play the five senses game. You need to pause for a moment and notice five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. Next you can try some mindful breathing. Take a deep breath in through your nose and slowly breathe out through your mouth. Imagine your breath filling up a balloon then gently floating away. Finally we can try mindful listening. Close your eyes and listen carefully. What sounds can you hear? Maybe birds chirping, a clock ticking or your own breathing. Noticing sounds help us stay in the moment. Which of those mindful moments would you like, take a deep breath in and out. Now focus on one sound you can hear, maybe it's just my voice, a soft breeze or something nearby. Just take a moment to listen and notice. Now slowly open your eyes. How did that feel? Practising mindfulness, even just for a few moments, can help you feel calm and focused.
You've done such an amazing job today learning about mindfulness. Remember, mindfulness is about being present, paying attention to the all around you, whether it's taking a mindful breath, listening closely or noticing something new, you have the power to bring mindfulness into your day. Here's your mindful moment challenge. Try to be mindful for one minute every day this week. It could be while brushing your teeth, walking to school or even eating a snack. Notice how it makes you feel. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, we'll explore magic breathing,
learning simple breathing exercises to help us feel calm. I can't wait to see you there. Thank you for joining me today. Keep noticing, keep breathing, and as always, keep shining. Keep noticing, keep breathing, and as always, keep shining.
