Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for another episode in our series, all about emotions in everyday life. In our last episode we talked about family feelings and how to handle emotions at home. Did you try using I feel statements with your family? If you did, I hope it helped everyone feel more connected. Today we're focusing on school time emotions.

How to stay calm and focused when the classroom feels busy or overwhelming. Whether you're feeling nervous about a test, frustrated with a tricky subject, or distracted by noise, I've got tips to help you feel calm and ready to learn. Let's get started. School is a place where we learn, grow and have fun with our friends. But because we spend so much time here, it's also a place where we might feel big emotions like worry, frustration or even excitement. Have you ever felt nervous before answering a question in front of the class? Or maybe frustrated when a math problem didn't make sense. Those feelings are normal. The important thing is learning how to handle them so that you can focus and do your best. Let's hear a story about a girl named Maya and how she learned to stay calm in a busy classroom. Maya loved her teacher and her classmates but sometimes the classroom felt too noisy. One day the class was working on a group project and everyone was talking at once. Maya felt her chest tighten and her head started to hurt. I can't think, she thought. Maya raised her hand and asked her teacher, can I take a quiet minute at my desk? Her teacher nodded and Maya sat down. She closed her eyes and took three deep breaths. She imagined a peaceful garden in her mind. After a minute she felt calmer and ready to join her group again. What do you think Maya learned about handling emotions at school?

Just like Maya, we can all learn how to manage our emotions at school. Here are three simple strategies to help you stay calm and focused. Number one, remember to breathe and pause. If you feel overwhelmed, take three slow breaths. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. This helps your body relax and your mind focus. Next we can use a calming phrase. Think of a phrase like, I can do this, or stay calm and steady. Saying it in your mind can help you stay positive and focused. Finally, create a mental calm spot. Imagine a place that makes you feel peaceful, like a beach, a garden, or your favourite cozy chair. When you feel stressed, close your eyes for a moment and picture that place. These tools can help you feel more in control of your emotions, even in a busy classroom.

Let's practice using these tools together. First we're going to breathe and pause. Sit comfortably, Hold it and now breathe out through your mouth for six seconds. Well done. Our next strategy was our calming phrase. Think of a phrase that helps you feel strong and steady like I've got this or one step at a time. Say it in your mind now. Finally, we're going to find our calm spot. Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful place. What do you see? What do you hear?

Just take a moment to picture yourself there. Great job. Practising these tools will make it easier to use them when you need them in class. You've done an amazing job today learning how to handle school time emotions. Remember, feeling nervous, frustrated or overwhelmed is normal and with tools like breathing, calming phrases and mental calm spots

you can feel more focused and ready to learn. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week. The next time you feel a big emotion at school, try one of the tools we practiced today.
