Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for another episode in our series, all about emotions in everyday life. In our last episode we talked about friendship feelings and how to be a good listener. Did you practice listening with your ears, eyes and heart this week? If you did, I'm sure your friends appreciated it. Today we're shifting our focus to family feelings.
Families are full of emotions. Sometimes they're happy and other times they can feel a bit tricky. By the end of this episode, you'll learn how to handle emotions at home and create more understanding and harmony with your family. So let's get started. Families are special because they're the people we spend the most time with, but spending so much time together means we'll feel all kinds of emotions, good ones and tricky ones. Have you ever felt frustrated with a sibling or maybe even your parents? That's okay, it happens to everyone. What's important is learning how to understand and express those feelings in a way that brings us closer together instead of pushing us apart. When we can talk about our feelings with our family it helps everyone feel more connected and cared for. Let's hear a story about a boy named Jamie and how he learned to handle family feelings. Jamie loved doing puzzles. One afternoon he was working on a big puzzle with his little sister Ruby.
Ruby accidentally knocked over the table and sent the pieces flying everywhere. Jamie felt a wave of frustration and shouted, Ruby, you ruined it! Ruby looked scared and ran to her room. Jamie's dad came over and said, I know you're upset Jamie, but Ruby didn't mean to knock over your puzzle. Let's talk about how you're feeling. Jamie said, I'm mad because I worked so hard on it. His dad replied, it's okay to feel mad, but let's think about how we can fix this together. Jamie took a deep breath and decided to apologise to Ruby.
Together they picked up the puzzle pieces and even found a few that had been missing. Jamie learned that by talking about his feelings and asking for help, he made things better for everyone. What do you think Jamie learned about family feelings? Just like Jamie, we can all learn how to handle emotions with our family. Here are three steps you can try the next time you feel upset or frustrated at home. Number one, pause and breathe. When you feel a strong emotion take a moment to pause and take a deep breath. This helps you calm down before you react. Next, remember to use the I feel statements. Instead of blaming others, explain how you feel. For example, you could say, I feel upset because my toy broke. Instead of, you ruined my toy. Finally, we can work together.
Ask, how can we solve this problem as a team? Families work best when everyone helps and supports each other. By practicing these steps you can turn tricky moments into opportunities to grow closer to your family. Let's practice how to handle family feelings with a little role-play. I'll describe a situation and you think about what you could say or do to make that situation Okay, our first situation.
Your sibling takes the last snack that you wanted. What could you say to them to let them know how you feel? Well done.
Next situation. You accidentally make a mess in the kitchen and your parent looks so upset.
How could you explain your feelings and offer to help.
Good job.
Finally, your family is deciding what to watch on TV and you don't get to pick. How could you stay calm and work together to make it fair? Well done. Practising these steps will help you handle family feelings with kindness and understanding. You have done an amazing job today learning about family feelings and how to navigate emotions at home. Remember, families are full of different emotions and that's okay. What matters most is how we talk about our feelings and work together to solve problems. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week.
The next time you feel a tricky emotion at home, try the three steps, pause and breathe, use I feel statements and work together. Then notice how it makes the situation better for everyone.
Next time on mindful moments with Miss Harrison, we'll talk about managing emotions at school and staying calm in a busy classroom. I can't wait to see you then. Thank you for joining me today. Remember you're doing an incredible job just by learning how to understand your feelings and care for the people around you. Until next time, take care and keep shining. you. Until next time, take care and keep shining.
