Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so glad you're here today. In our last episode we talked all about happiness, those warm sunny moments that make us feel good inside. Did you try the gratitude challenge? I hope you found some small joys to brighten your week. Today we're going to talk about a feeling that's a little bit trickier. That feeling is called worry. We all feel worried sometimes and that's okay but wouldn't it be great to have some tools to help us feel calm when that worry shows up? By the end of this episode you'll have your own calm toolkit to use whenever you feel nervous or anxious.
Let's get started.
So, what is worry?
Well, worry is a feeling we get when we're unsure about something, like when we think, what if this goes wrong? It might make your heart beat a little bit faster or your stomach feel funny, like butterflies flying around. Worry is a bit like a storm cloud in your mind, but here's the good news. Storm clouds don't last forever and there are ways to make them feel smaller and much less scary.
Let's hear a story about a boy named Sam, who learns how to deal with his worry cloud. One day, Sam woke up with a small grey cloud above his head. He had a big test at school and he couldn't stop thinking about it. As the day went on, the cloud got bigger and darker. Sam felt so worried that he couldn't focus on anything else.
Then Sam remembered what his teacher had said. When your worry feels big, try to take control of it. Sam took a deep breath and said, Hello worry cloud, I see you. Then he asked himself, what can I do about my worry? Sam made a plan to study for his test and reminded himself that it was OK not to know all of the answers. Slowly the worry cloud got smaller and smaller until it floated away.
What do you think Sam learned about worry? Just like Sam, we can all learn to calm our worry clouds. Here are three tools you can use when you feel worried. Number one, you can name your worry. Start by saying, I'm feeling worried. Giving your worry a name makes it feel smaller and easier to handle. Number two is called five four three two one grounding. You'll need to look around you and find five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.
This helps bring your mind back to the present moment. And finally you can talk back to your worries. Imagine your worry is a little voice saying what if something bad happens? You can answer back and say but what if it goes just fine? Which of these tools would you like to try the next time you feel worried? Okay, let's practice calming a worry together.
Imagine you're feeling nervous about something, like maybe meeting new people or trying something for the first time. Step one, we are going to name your worry. Say out loud, I feel worried because. Well done. Step two we are now going to try some grounding. So look around you right now. What are five things you can smell and one thing you can taste? And now finally we are going to talk back to that worry.
Say thank you Worry for trying to help but actually I've got this. Does that feel better? With practice these tools can help you calm your mind whenever you need them. You've done such a wonderful job today learning how to handle your worries. Remember, worry is normal, it's just your brain trying to keep you safe. But now you have tools like naming your worry, grounding and talking back to it to feel calm and in control. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week.
The next time you feel worried, try one of these tools. Then tell someone how it helped you. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison we'll talk about kindness and empathy, how to understand other people's feelings and share kindness with the people around us. I can't wait to see you then. Thank you for joining me today. Remember you are doing an amazing job and I am so proud of you.
Until next time take care and keep shining. take care and keep shining.
