Hello everyone, welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for episode two. Last time we talked about emotions, those important feelings we have inside us. We learnt that emotions are like friends who visit us to tell us something about how we're feeling. Do you remember what emotions you felt yesterday? Today we are going to talk about how to name those feelings. Giving our emotions a name is the first step in understanding them. Are you ready?
Have you ever felt upset but didn't know exactly why. Maybe you felt a little bit off or a bit weird. That's because sometimes it's hard to know what we're feeling if we don't have the words for it. When we name our feelings, it's like shining a light on them. Instead of feeling lost in our emotions, we can say, oh, I'm feeling frustrated, or, oh, I'm feeling so excited. Naming our feelings helps us to understand what's happening inside and what we can do about it.
Let's hear a story about a girl named Lily who learns how to name her feelings. Lily lived near a magical forest called the feelings forest. Every time she had a strong emotion, a tree in the forest would glow.
One day, Lily felt strange inside. Her stomach was tight and her face felt hot. She walked into the feelings forest and there she saw a glowing red tree. What are you trying to tell me? Lily asked the tree. A tiny voice replied, you're feeling angry. Lily said, oh that makes sense. I felt upset because my friend didn't share with me. As soon as Lily said the word angry she felt a little better. The tree glowed softer and Lily smiled. Thank you for helping me name my feeling, she said. What do you think Lily learned from the feelings forest? Did you notice how Lily felt better after she named her feeling? That's because when we name our feelings it's easier to understand them and decide what to do next. Let's practice naming some feelings together. Here are some common emotions we all feel. Happiness, like when you get a surprise or see someone you love.
Sadness, like when you miss someone or maybe you lose a favourite toy. Angry, when something feels a little bit unfair. Excited, like when you're about to go on a trip or maybe have a birthday. Or worried, when you're not really sure what might happen next. Can you think of any other feelings you have had? Okay, now it's time to play a game. It's called feelings charades. I'll describe how someone might act and you try to guess the feeling. Are you ready? Okay, number one. Someone is jumping up and down, clapping their hands and smiling. What do you think they might be feeling? Well done. I would have said excited too. Number two. Someone has their arms crossed this time and their face looks a little bit scrunched up. What do you think they might be feeling?
Good job. I would have said angry or maybe in the red zone. Number three. Someone is looking down, their shoulders are slumped and they're sniffling. What do you think they might be feeling? Well done, I would have said sad or in the blue zone. You're getting so good at naming feelings, well done. You've done amazing work today. We've learned that naming our feelings helps us to understand and manage them, just like Lily in the feelings forest. When we name our emotions they will feel a little less big and a lot more manageable. Before we go I have a little challenge for you. Tonight think about one feeling you had during the day. Tell someone in your family what that feeling was and why you felt it. Next time we'll talk about what to do when we have big feelings like anger or worry. I can't wait to see you again.
