Mindful Eating – Slowing Down and Savouring the Moment

Helping children discover how slowing down and using their senses can turn an everyday meal or snack into an opportunity to become more present, notice more, and enjoy the experience of eating with curiosity and appreciation.

In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison’s Mindfulness for Everyday Life series, children explore mindful eating and discover what can happen when we give our full attention to something we often do automatically.

Children learn that mindful eating means noticing the colours, smells, textures, and tastes of food rather than rushing through a meal while thinking about something else. By slowing down and paying attention, an ordinary bite can become an opportunity to notice something completely new.

Through Leo’s story, children meet someone who is always the fastest eater in his family. He usually gobbles down his food before everyone else has barely begun. But during a special lunch with his grandpa, Leo is challenged to eat with his senses. He looks at the bright strawberries, crunchy toast, and warm soup, smells his food, and then takes one small bite and really tastes it. Suddenly, Leo begins noticing flavours he had never experienced before.

The episode introduces a simple four-stage mindful eating practice: look, smell, taste, and pause. Children learn to become curious about what they can see, smell, and taste while also noticing how their body feels as they eat.

This episode encourages children to understand that mindfulness doesn't always require sitting quietly or closing their eyes. It can happen during ordinary moments—including breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a simple snack—whenever we choose to slow down and pay attention.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • What mindful eating means
  • How rushing or distraction can stop us noticing our food
  • How to explore food using sight, smell, taste, and touch
  • Why slowing down can help us become more present
  • How to pause and notice what our body is telling us
  • How an everyday mealtime can become a mindful moment

Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:

Look with curiosity
Before eating, take a moment to notice the colours, shapes, and patterns of your food.

Use your senses
Notice how your food smells, feels, and tastes. You might discover something you have never noticed before.

Take one slow bite
You don't have to eat an entire meal mindfully. Start with one bite and give it your full attention.

Pause and notice your body
Take a moment to notice how you feel as you eat. Are you still hungry, beginning to feel full, or somewhere in between?

These skills help children develop present-moment awareness, curiosity, body awareness, and the ability to find mindful moments within ordinary everyday experiences.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

At least once each day this week, choose one bite or one part of a meal to eat mindfully.

Look at it carefully.
Notice its smell.
Take one slow bite.
Pay attention to its taste and texture.

Try to notice three things about your food that you might have missed if you had eaten it quickly.

Perfect for:

  • Primary school-aged children beginning to explore everyday mindfulness
  • Classrooms exploring PSHE, mindfulness, senses, and self-awareness
  • Families encouraging calmer and more attentive mealtimes
  • Teachers and pastoral leaders introducing practical mindfulness activities
  • Children learning how to slow down and become more present in everyday life

Quote of the Week:

"When we slow down and really notice, an ordinary moment can become something special."
