Turning Stress into Strength – Finding Courage in Challenges

Helping children understand that stress is not always a sign to stop, and showing them how challenging moments can sometimes become opportunities to discover courage, learn something new, and recognise their own strength.

In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison’s Managing Stress and Overwhelm series, children explore how they can respond when stress appears during something new, difficult, or challenging. They learn that while stress can feel uncomfortable, sometimes it is a signal that something matters to us or that we are stretching ourselves in a new way.

Through Layla’s story, children discover what happens when she decides to climb the tall play tower at the park. Her tummy flips, her heart thumps, and her palms become sweaty. Halfway up, she wants to stop—but she remembers the words, “Stress means your bravery is waking up.” Layla takes the challenge one step at a time until she reaches the top and discovers not only that she can do it, but that she is stronger than she realised.

The episode introduces three practical ways to move from stress towards strength: noticing what the feeling might be telling us, using kind and brave words to ourselves, and looking back afterwards to recognise what we learned and how we grew.

This episode encourages children to remember previous challenges they have overcome and create their own strength story, building confidence from the knowledge that they have faced difficult things before and can draw upon those experiences again.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • Why stress isn't always a sign that something is wrong
  • How challenges can sometimes help us learn and grow
  • How to notice what stressful feelings might be telling us
  • How encouraging self-talk can help during difficult moments
  • Why taking one small brave step can make a challenge feel more manageable
  • How reflecting on past challenges can build confidence for the future

Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:

Notice the feeling
When stress appears, pause and notice what is happening in your body and mind. Ask yourself what this moment might be helping you learn.

Use brave words
Try encouraging yourself with words such as, “I'm learning,” “I can take this one step at a time,” or “It's okay to feel nervous and try anyway.”

Take one small brave step
You don't have to overcome a whole challenge at once. Sometimes courage begins with taking just one small step forward.

Look back and recognise your growth
After a difficult moment has passed, think about what helped you, what you learned, and what the experience showed you about yourself.

These skills help children develop courage, reflection, confidence, resilience, and a healthier understanding of the feelings that can accompany challenge and growth.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

This week, when you face something challenging, pause and ask yourself:

“What strength is this helping me grow?”

Then choose one small, brave step you can take.

Remember the difficult things you have managed before. Each challenge can become another part of your strength story.
