Creating a Calm Mind – Finding Peace When Thoughts Feel Busy
Helping children use mindfulness and breathing techniques to feel calmer, more focused, and better able to manage stress.
In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, children discover simple and powerful ways to create a calm mind when life feels busy, overwhelming, or stressful. While worries, strong emotions, and racing thoughts are a normal part of life, children can learn practical strategies to help themselves feel more balanced and in control.
Through Imran’s story and the image of a swirling snow globe, children learn that when their minds feel crowded with thoughts and feelings, they do not need to make those thoughts disappear. Instead, they can slow down, breathe, and give themselves time to settle, allowing their minds to become clearer and calmer.
This episode introduces mindfulness and breathing as gentle tools that children can use anytime they need a moment of peace, helping them build confidence in managing their emotions and wellbeing.
What children will learn in this episode:
- Why thoughts and feelings can sometimes feel overwhelming
- How a calm mind helps us think clearly and make good choices
- Simple breathing techniques to reduce stress and anxiety
- How mindfulness helps us focus on the present moment
- Why practising calm strategies regularly can strengthen emotional wellbeing
Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:
Use calming breaths
Slow, steady breathing helps the body relax and sends signals of safety to the brain.
Focus on the present moment
Paying attention to what you can see, hear, and feel helps quiet busy thoughts.
Pause before reacting
Taking a moment to breathe can help children respond thoughtfully instead of acting on strong emotions.
Create a calm routine
Having a simple strategy for stressful moments builds confidence and emotional resilience.
These skills help children develop self-regulation, emotional awareness, and healthy coping strategies that they can use throughout their lives.
Mindful Moment Challenge:
Choose one moment each day to practise either Balloon Breathing or Mindful Noticing. You might try it before school, before bed, before a test, or whenever you notice your thoughts starting to feel busy. Pay attention to how your mind and body feel afterwards.
Perfect for:
- Primary school-aged children learning emotional regulation skills
- Classrooms exploring PSHE, wellbeing, and mindfulness
- Families supporting children with stress, worries, or anxiety
- Teachers and pastoral leaders promoting emotional wellbeing
- Children developing lifelong strategies for staying calm and focused
Quote of the Week:
"A calm mind doesn't mean having no thoughts—it means learning how to let them settle."
