What Is Stress? – Understanding Big Feelings and Busy Minds
Helping children recognise stress, understand how it affects the mind and body, and learn that it can be managed with care and confidence.
In this first episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison’s Managing Stress and Overwhelm series, children are introduced to an important part of emotional wellbeing: understanding stress. Stress is something everyone experiences from time to time, whether they are children or adults, and learning to recognise it is the first step towards managing it.
Through Leo’s story, children discover that stress can show up in different ways. It might feel like a busy mind, a jumpy tummy, sweaty hands, racing thoughts, or a sense that there is simply too much happening at once. By learning to notice these signs early, children can begin to understand what their body and mind are trying to tell them.
This episode helps children realise that stress is a normal part of life and that there are simple, healthy ways to respond when things start to feel overwhelming.
What children will learn in this episode:
- What stress is and why it happens
- How stress can affect thoughts, feelings, and the body
- Why everyone experiences stress sometimes
- How to recognise early signs of feeling overwhelmed
- Why noticing stress is the first step towards feeling calmer
Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:
Notice your body's signals
Pay attention to clues such as a fast heartbeat, tense muscles, tummy aches, or feeling restless.
Recognise busy thoughts
Learn to spot when worries or racing thoughts are making life feel more difficult.
Name what you're feeling
Putting feelings into words can make them feel easier to understand and manage.
Pause and check in
Taking a moment to notice your thoughts and feelings can help prevent stress from building up.
These strategies help children develop self-awareness and emotional regulation, creating strong foundations for managing stress in healthy ways.
Mindful Moment Challenge:
Take a few moments each day to do a Stress Check-In. Pause, take a slow breath, and ask yourself: "How does my body feel?" and "What is happening in my mind right now?" You might draw, write, or talk about what you notice.
Perfect for:
- Primary school-aged children learning about emotions and wellbeing
- Classrooms exploring PSHE, emotional literacy, and mental health
- Families supporting children with worries or feelings of overwhelm
- Teachers and pastoral leaders helping children develop self-awareness
- Children building resilience and healthy coping skills
Quote of the Week:
"When we notice stress, we give ourselves the chance to care for it."
